Types of Work Experience
GLOW partners with a number of youth service organizations to provide a wide variety of career and employment experiences. All programs include pre-employment skills training — and many include a stipend or wage.
Job Shadow
Short-term placements, usually one day or less, where a student observes an individual at work and learns about their specific duties — as well as how that role fits within the larger organization. Usually scheduled during the school year.
Paid Work Experience
Long-term paid placements lasting 2 weeks to 3 months at an employer's work site. Designed to give real employment exposure in a trade or career. Upon successful completion, youth are expected to transition to the employer's payroll.
Internship
Structured, supervised placements connecting youth with employers in their chosen field of interest. Internships build career-specific experience and are a strong foundation for future employment and college applications.
On-the-Job Training (OJT)
Employer-led training at the work site where youth receive real job skills while earning a paycheck. Designed specifically for out-of-school youth transitioning into full-time employment.
Occupational Training
Classroom-based training in a specific occupation or trade, leading to an industry-recognized credential. Available for out-of-school youth seeking a direct career pathway with supportive services included.
Career Assessment Programs
Participants earn a stipend or wage while learning about many different occupations and receiving pre-employment skills training. A great first step for youth who are still exploring their options.
Summer Employment Opportunities
Earn money, build your résumé, and gain real work experience this summer through GLOW's Summer Work Experience Programs.
Summer Work Experience Program
Are you between 14 and 19 years old and looking for a summer job? You may be eligible for our Summer Work Experience Programs — designed for you to gain valuable experience at a local employer or county agency. You can even help choose the right summer job for you from a selection of participating employers. You'll build your résumé and develop the soft skills you need to succeed in today's job market.
Tutoring and Support Services
Free tutoring is available to youth in multiple locations across the GLOW region. Take advantage of these resources — the work you do now is the foundation for the rest of your life.
Albion (Orleans County)
-
Middle School: Monday–Friday during homeroom, lunch, study hall, and after school.
-
High School: Tuesday and Thursday after school in Room 102.
Medina (Orleans County)
-
Middle School: After school. Check with your school's program coordinator for current schedule and room location.
"The work you do now will be the foundation for the rest of your life. Take the time now to work hard on preparing for the future. You will be so glad you did. It is important not to get behind on your schoolwork — using tutors available each day right after school is a great habit to get into. If you do that, by the time you get home, you'll have little or no schoolwork left to complete."
